This maple brown sugar oatmeal is the perfect, warm breakfast oatmeal recipe! The flavors of maple and brown sugar are prominent but not overpowering and complement the creamy oatmeal texture.

I’m a big sucker for a delicious oatmeal combination! Sometimes oatmeal gets a bad reputation of being mushy and bland. Not on my watch! With delicious combinations such as apple cinnamon oatmeal or almond joy oatmeal and chocolate peanut butter protein oatmeal, you can breathe new life into your morning oatmeal!

Why This Recipe Works

  • Never eat oatmeal from a package again! I promise you will have a newfound relationship with oatmeal if you just commit to stop eating packaged oatmeal! This oatmeal recipe is reminiscent of the traditional maple brown sugar oatmeal packets but is way yummier and creamier!
  • Easy to make. If you’re convinced using packaged oatmeal is better because it’s easier to just plop it in the microwave, think again. With just a few more minutes, you can have oatmeal that is much richer in flavor with just an extra step of boiling the oatmeal on the stove.
  • Control what goes in your oatmeal. Homemade oatmeal is a much better way to control how much sugar you have in your morning breakfast. Plus, no preservatives!

Ingredient Notes

Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal ingredients on a cream colored background.
  • Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: For a better texture, I use these oats. You’re welcome to use instant or quick oats, but just know those are a smaller oat so your texture will be different.
  • Maple Syrup: Any brand or version of maple syrup is fine to use.
  • Brown Sugar: Light or dark is fine. Dark brown sugar has a higher content of molasses, meaning the color is different and the flavor is more prominent.
  • Milk: I used almond milk so it’s a dairy free oatmeal, but you can use whatever milk you’d like. You’re welcome to use water instead if you’d like. I like using milk because it makes it creamier.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook on medium low, stirring frequently, until the milk has been absorbed and the mixture has thickened to your liking. I cooked mine for 12-15 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat to Let cool and thicken up slightly.
  1. Top with additional brown sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup to your liking.

FAQs

Is maple and brown sugar oatmeal healthy?

The sugars in the maple syrup are a much healthier form of sugar than your refined granulated sugar. However, if you want to make this oatmeal even healthier, you can limit the amount of brown sugar you add in.

Can oatmeal make you gain weight?

Just like everything else, balance is key. Oatmeal is a healthy breakfast option if you keep the added sugar to a minimum.

Is oatmeal good for weight loss? What are the benefits of oatmeal?

Oats are a great source of antioxidants and they can help lower blood sugar levels. While oatmeal can support weight loss, it all depends on what you put in your oatmeal that can detract from that.

This warm and delicious oatmeal is so yummy and much better than any pre-packaged brown sugar oatmeal you buy at the store.
Prep Time: 2 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 17 minutes
Servings: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 3/4 cups milk - I used almond milk, can use dairy, oat milk etc.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar - packed, light or dark brown sugar is fine
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a saucepan and cook on medium low, stirring frequently, until milk has been absorbed and mixture has thickened to your liking. I cooked mine for 12-15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat to Let cool and thicken up slightly.

Notes

Can also cook it in water. Milk just makes for a much creamier oatmeal.
