Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal
This maple brown sugar oatmeal is the perfect, warm breakfast oatmeal recipe! The flavors of maple and brown sugar are prominent but not overpowering and complement the creamy oatmeal texture.
I’m a big sucker for a delicious oatmeal combination! Sometimes oatmeal gets a bad reputation of being mushy and bland. Not on my watch! With delicious combinations such as apple cinnamon oatmeal or almond joy oatmeal and chocolate peanut butter protein oatmeal, you can breathe new life into your morning oatmeal!
Why This Recipe Works
- Never eat oatmeal from a package again! I promise you will have a newfound relationship with oatmeal if you just commit to stop eating packaged oatmeal! This oatmeal recipe is reminiscent of the traditional maple brown sugar oatmeal packets but is way yummier and creamier!
- Easy to make. If you’re convinced using packaged oatmeal is better because it’s easier to just plop it in the microwave, think again. With just a few more minutes, you can have oatmeal that is much richer in flavor with just an extra step of boiling the oatmeal on the stove.
- Control what goes in your oatmeal. Homemade oatmeal is a much better way to control how much sugar you have in your morning breakfast. Plus, no preservatives!
Ingredient Notes
- Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: For a better texture, I use these oats. You’re welcome to use instant or quick oats, but just know those are a smaller oat so your texture will be different.
- Maple Syrup: Any brand or version of maple syrup is fine to use.
- Brown Sugar: Light or dark is fine. Dark brown sugar has a higher content of molasses, meaning the color is different and the flavor is more prominent.
- Milk: I used almond milk so it’s a dairy free oatmeal, but you can use whatever milk you’d like. You’re welcome to use water instead if you’d like. I like using milk because it makes it creamier.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Add all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook on medium low, stirring frequently, until the milk has been absorbed and the mixture has thickened to your liking. I cooked mine for 12-15 minutes.
- Remove from heat to Let cool and thicken up slightly.
- Top with additional brown sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup to your liking.
Recipe Tips
This is a great recipe to make a lot of and eat throughout the week, making breakfast even quicker! Store any leftover oatmeal in an airtight container in the fridge. Microwave with a splash of milk each morning prior to eating.
Top this maple brown sugar oatmeal with pecans, bananas, etc.
FAQs
The sugars in the maple syrup are a much healthier form of sugar than your refined granulated sugar. However, if you want to make this oatmeal even healthier, you can limit the amount of brown sugar you add in.
Just like everything else, balance is key. Oatmeal is a healthy breakfast option if you keep the added sugar to a minimum.
Oats are a great source of antioxidants and they can help lower blood sugar levels. While oatmeal can support weight loss, it all depends on what you put in your oatmeal that can detract from that.

This recipe is simple BUT quick! Stopped using package oatmeal. Feeling way better giving this to my kids and they LOVED it!
So happy you found this recipe and that your kids love it!
Way too sweet, I like sweet things but this is just way too much. I feel like it’d be alright if the sweet was toned down.
Allie, someone else commented and said they cut the maple syrup and sugar amounts in half and that was the perfect amount. I recommend trying that. Thanks!
Great recipe! I love it. I’ve tried others and I never could get the right consistency or sweetness. This is definitely a winner.
I’m so glad you loved it Pam!
My 5 year old loves the packets of this flavor but homemade is so much better. She requests it often now! We use half the sugar and maple syrup and it’s perfect.
Happy to hear your 5-year-old loves this oatmeal recipe! My kids love it too. Thanks for your review.
Can you substitute quick oats instead of the rolled oats?
Yes.
This is my go-to oatmeal recipe! I usually double it and only use about half of the recommended brown sugar. I also add in 2 eggs from our chickens and a big scoop of protein powder for extra nutrition! 😍
Love the additions, Hannah!
Definitely warming and comforting! It has 50g off sugar and you can taste it; too much for me. Next time I’ll add salt, and try cutting the sugar and syrup in half. Thanks for sharing!
This was only missing a pinch of salt to make it perfect. I also added a banana, delicious!
I made it for my grandkids and they loved it! We loved it! The second time I made it I used a little less sugar, but I really love how simple it is to make, super yummy! Thank you
made it in 10 minutes was so so easy and the flavor was perfect. i added a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg, great flavor!! will now make this recipe and stop buying the packet oatmeal’s and save a lot of money from now on. added some walnuts on top also for some crunch. amazing.
The oatmeal itself was creamy and delicious, but I found it was REALLY sweet. I think if I added less sugar this would be perfect for every morning! I also added a little cinnamon because I felt like I could only taste sugar in the oatmeal. Overall, a pretty good recipe, just needs a few adjustments for my taste!
Can this be made with a sugar substitute?
I haven’t tried before, so I don’t have any guidance. Give it a try and let me know how it turns out!
Hi! I actually just tried it with Swerve Brown Sugar. I subbed for the same amount. It’s delish!! 🙂
Delicious! My only suggestion would be to add a pinch of salt 🙂
I made this for diner this week and it was a hit! Everyone loved it. It’s perfectly sweetened and so creamy.
