Why This Recipe Works

  • Uses staple spice ingredients. This authentic fajita seasoning recipe uses spices you should have on hand in your pantry! It’s super easy!
  • Better flavor. Mixing this up on your own will produce a much better flavor. Everything is better homemade, and that’s no difference with this recipe!
  • Add it to any recipe for better flavor. I’m convinced you can add fajita seasoning to any recipe and you are immediately making it better! You can use this as a dip or spread as well. Simply add the mixture to some sour cream!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients used to make homemade fajita seasoning.
  • Cornstarch: This will help thicken the mixture to create a bit of sauciness when added to the dish. It will also help bind the spices to the food while cooking.
  • Chili Powder: This is the base of the fajita seasoning recipe. Chili powder isn’t spicy. It has a mild flavor.
  • Cumin: The cumin is probably the easiest spice to pick out if you were smelling the authentic fajita seasoning after making it.
  • Paprika: This will add a delicious smokey flavor to the mixture.
  • Salt: The salt will enhance the spices in the mix.
  • Cayenne Pepper: If you like spicy fajitas add more cayenne than what’s called for in the recipe. I add 1/4 tsp to mine.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Combine the ingredients and stir. Stir the cornstarch, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne together in a bowl. Use right away or store for later use.

Recipe Tips

Add more or less cayenne pepper according to your spice preference. Cayenne pepper is what will make things spicy. Feel free to omit if you want a mild spice.

This recipe makes about 4 1/2 tablespoons of seasoning. I use a little more than half of this recipe when making sheet pan fajitas.

Make Ahead, Storing, and Freezing

Store the authentic fajita seasoning in a Ziplock bag or airtight container at room temperature until ready to use.

Seasoning will last 4-6 months if stored properly.

Since the mix will store for a long time at room temperature, there is no need to freeze it.

Recipe FAQs

Is this fajita seasoning spicy?

No it is not spicy. There is a touch of cayenne pepper to add flavor, but it’s not enough to be spicy. If you are wary, feel free to omit it altogether. If you want a lot of spice, up the cayenne a lot!

Can I make this in bulk?

Yes you can! Use the recipe multiplier in the recipe card to make more to have on hand for future dinners.

What can I use fajita seasoning for?

It’s clear you can use this mix on fajitas, but you can add it to sour cream to make a dip or spread and serve with tortilla chips or baked tortilla strips. Use it as a dip or seasoning for taquitos or burritos, etc.
