These chocolate peanut butter protein balls taste like a Reeses peanut butter cup. Dead serious. When you’re searching for a pick-me-up snack, or just a low calorie protein ball recipe.. this is it! Not to mention it tastes AMAZING! In fact, my husband made multiple comments saying, “These are by far the best protein balls you’ve ever made.”
For a bar version, try my Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bars recipe. Equally easy and delicious!
It doesn’t stop there. He continued with:
“These are so good, I eat them as dessert.”
“When are you making more of those chocolate peanut butter protein balls?”
“Are you planning on posting them to your blog? Because you should. I really like them.”
And last but not least, Sunday night we sat down to eat a slice of leftover chocolate birthday cake and my husband turned down the cake because he’d rather eat one of these healthy balls. You guys!! I was stunned.

I’m considering this hands down the BEST protein ball recipe ever. Obviously I needed a breakfast recipe that tastes just like this one, so I made chocolate peanut butter protein oatmeal. It’s amazing!
I also have a snickerdoodle protein balls recipe that is absolutely delicious too!
Ingredients
If you’re wondering, “What’s in protein balls?” It’s quite simple. Only a few ingredients are needed to make this easy snack. An added bonus is that this recipe is naturally gluten-free and can be made vegan with simple substitutions.
- Old fashioned rolled oats
- Mini chocolate chips – totally optional, but I love the slight crunch it adds to the recipe.
- Chocolate protein powder – any brand will do.
- Peanut butter – I use creamy, you can also use a natural peanut butter.
- Honey
- Water
How to make Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Balls
Place all of the ingredients in a large bowl.
Using a large spoon, wooden spoon, or spatula, stir the ingredients until combined.
Pro tip: if the “dough” is too dry add more water, a teaspoon at a time, until the mixture reaches your satisfaction.
Using a small cookie scoop, portion the dough and then use your hands to roll the portioned dough into balls.
Place the balls on a parchment lined plate or small cookie sheet and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Remove from the refrigerator and transfer the balls to a ziplock bag or an airtight container.
These Reese’s-type protein balls will last in the fridge for 9-10 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months.
FAQs
Omit the honey and use a different sweetener perhaps maple syrup or agave. Also make sure you’re using a vegan protein powder.

Yes! Freeze for up to 3 months.
While this is more of a personal based question, protein balls are “good for you,” in that they’re full of protein. Protein makes you feel more full with less food. Rather than eating empty calorie foods, some people note that eating healthy protein balls helps curb their appetite and not snack on unhealthy foods throughout the day.

Love these!! I put them in the freezer for a sweet treat after supper. Just wondering about the peanut butter… did you use natural or regular?
I use regular peanut butter. But natural works great as well!
Amazing!!!! Super easy to make and so incredibly delicious ❤️ I added a teaspoon of vanilla extract too and the flavours pop! Thank you from New Zealand x
These are delicious! I will definitely be making these often. I used Justin’s honey almond butter because that’s what I had. Next time I will use peanut butter because it’s less expensive.
they were incredible. I swapped the honey for maple syrup and really enjoyed them. thank you for the amazing recipe!!!
I made these and they are delicious!! Such a good treat!
I made these the other week, super delish so I’m about to make them again! So yum. Thanks for the recipe!
Wow! These are super tasty. This was my first time making any type of protein energy ball yet I’ve bought them at cafes and stores. I followed this easy recipe and they came out perfect. Definitely want to eat the whole batch…
Thanks for the kind comment! We love these at our house. They require some self control because they’re so tasty! Glad you enjoyed them.
these are phenomenal. I want to come to your kitchen!
Would this be a good recipe to try to lower cholesterol and needing a high soluble fiber snack?
Sorry, meant to leave 5 stars! 🙂
Super-delicious! So glad I tried these — Thanks for the recipe!
We make these all the time but use espresso instead of water. I feel it gives them just a little more interesting flavor and everybody in the family loves them!
This is SO good! I always hate the “protein-y” after taste of protein powder but there is none here! I also added about 1-2 tsp of cacao powder!
They look so deliscious, I need to try them. Are the calories listed per ball or for all the balls?
the calories are per ball ( aka per serving). Enjoy!
Could you substitute old fashion oats for steel cut oats?
I haven’t tried steel cut oats in this recipe. I would suggest you stick with the old fashioned oats. From my understanding one needs to cook or soak steel cut oats to soften them up. But with that said, you can always try the recipe with the steel cut oats! You have nothing to lose. 🙂
Hey amanda! I just made with steel cut oats and it turned out super good! Never tried with regular oats but really like them!
How much cooked steel cut oats would you add?
I would much prefer that over rolled oats
I haven’t tried it with steel cut oats. You could probably just mix some in and add more as needed.
So working with what I have on hand, I’m wondering, can I sub the honey for splenda? the oats for coconut flour? Or do you think that sounds like a recipe for disaster? I may just have to give it a go because we are trying to make ends meet with a bare pantry lol Thanks for brainstorming with me <3
You know, I’m not really sure how they’ll turn out with those substitutions. Let me know how it goes!
Just gave these delicious snacks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
I thought I had seen the nutritional info on them before but can’t seem to locate now. Could you please send? Thanks so much. Can’t wait to try another recipe.
Thanks for the kind comment Gena! I’m glad you’re family loves them as much as we do.
The nutritional info pulls up if you print the recipe card.
These are absolutely amazing! Everyone in my family loves them.
Woah! What an amazing recipe. I’ve made in 8 times now and I can’t get enough. Now my friends and family are obsessed! Thank you :)))
My husband and I LOVE this recipe. It’s a healthy recipe, but it tastes like dessert = my favorite kind of recipe! The last time we made this, we were out of chocolate protein powder, so instead we used a packet of hot chocolate mix! (1 packet if you are doing half of the recipe and 2 if you are doing the full recipe.) It was the perfect substitution.
What a great idea to use ho chocolate mix! Thanks for the feedback and 5 star review!
