Why This Recipe Works

  • Perfect finger food. This honey mustard ham and cheese sliders is the perfect finger food recipe! They are easy to serve and share — plus they are easy to make in bulk!
  • Flavorful! A homemade honey mustard and a homemade poppy seed and Worcestershire sauce bring the most amazing flavors into this easy and delicious honey mustard ham and cheese sliders recipe!
  • Easy recipe. I’ve seen quite a few Hawaiian roll sliders recipes that require you to chill the sliders overnight. As the ham and cheese sliders with poppy seed dressing bake, the sauce will soak into the rolls enough that you don’t need to let them chill overnight.

Ingredient Notes

  • Poppy Seeds: Feel free to use more or less poppy seeds to your liking. The ham and cheese slider with poppy seed dressing is a huge game changer when it comes to flavor!
  • Butter: The melted butter will form the base of the poppy seed dressing topping. The bottoms of the rolls will soak up that buttery sauce and you will be in heaven!
  • Worcestershire Sauce: Ham and cheese sliders with Worcestershire sauce adds a depth of flavor you wouldn’t get without the Worcestershire.
  • Sweet Hawaiian Rolls: You can use any type of roll you’d like. I love this ham and cheese slider recipe on the Hawaiian rolls!
  • Sliced Ham: I just used a simple deli ham for these.
  • Swiss Cheese: You can use Swiss cheese or Monterey Jack cheese. Pepper jack cheese if you want some kick. I would stick to a white cheese though (so not cheddar or Colby Jack).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Make the honey mustard. In a small bowl whisk the mayo, mustard, and honey.
  2. Make the poppy seed dressing. In a glass measuring cup, melt the butter. Add the poppy seeds, Worcestershire sauce, and 2 tablespoons of the honey mustard you just made. Whisk to combine, set aside.

Recipe Tips

I like to use the King’s Hawaiian rolls for this recipe, however, any Dinner Rolls will work if you don’t like the Hawaiian rolls.

Another way of assembling these Hawaiian roll sliders is to cut the tops of the soft Hawaiian rolls in one layer (without separating the individual sliders from each other). That way you have all the bottoms connected and all the tops connected. Then you can spread the mayo and honey mustard over the slabs of rolls, layer the cheese and ham, add the top layer of the rolls and add the poppy seed butter topping.

If you separate the Hawaiian sweet rolls out and make them into individual sandwiches/sliders, then the poppy seed butter sauce will coat each side of the individual rolls. If you make them as a sheet (where you keep the rolls together and cut horizontally to separate the bottom and top of the rolls) the butter sauce will pool in between the crevasses of the rolls — either way is delicious!

Add in as much cheese or ham as you’d like! This is a great recipe for leftover ham from a previous dinner.

Make Ahead, Storing, and Freezing

You can make the honey mustard sauce and the poppy seed butter sauce ahead of time. You’ll simply want to warm up the poppy seed butter mixture prior to using it as it will re-solidify once it cools.

You can also pre-fill the rolls with the meat and cheese ahead of time. Then on the day of when you’ll be enjoying these amazing honey mustard ham and cheese sliders you can add the mayo and honey mustard spreads.

Store any leftover sliders in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Remove and warm in the oven before serving.

To freeze, let chill completely. Cover and store in a freezer safe container, preferably something you can place in the oven. Store in the freezer for up to 2 months. Remove and bake from frozen.

Recipe FAQs

Are ham and cheese sliders good cold?

These Hawaiian ham and swiss sliders are best served warm! The cheese gets melty, the ham is warm, and the sauce softens the rolls ever so slightly. To reheat, I recommend returning to the oven so the exteriors of the rolls gets a tad crunchy!

Can ham and cheese sliders be frozen?

These sliders are best enjoyed right out of the oven! However, if you want to freeze them, I would chill them so they are a bit firm, then store in a freezer-safe container (preferably something you can bake the sliders in). Freeze for up to 2 months. Remove and bake from frozen.

What goes with ham and cheese sliders?

I would serve these Hawaiian ham and swiss sliders with a side salad and/or a soup.

What kind of cheese should I use?

I would use either Swiss cheese or Monterey Jack cheese. Those are my two best recommendations when it comes to cheese options. I would avoid any kind of cheddar cheeses.
